Sure, we changed our light bulbs to fluorescent. We set the thermostats so it wouldn't be frigid in the summer and baking in the winter. We checked the air on the tires in the delivery van. That took all of a few hours. But if you think about it; our industry creates a LOT of waste. We took some time and came up with solutions to minimize our waste and do what we could about the waste in the direct mail industry. Here's what we've come up with: Packaging. We have worked with our major customers and print suppliers to cut down on the volume of cardboard boxes used. Printed material used to come to us in boxes with each box holding just a few thousand mailpieces. Our big customers are now using Gaylord boxes. What boxes we do receive and now donated to the Bella Vista, Arkansas AARP chapter. We could sell them, but this accomplishes several benefits:
List hygiene. A clean list produces less waste. Less wasted postage money; less wasted print. Period. Good practices produce less wasted product. Attention to list selection. It is of utmost importance to ensure that the offer is matched to the recipient. If the offer isn't relevant, marketing material is just wasted trash. On that subject, if you feel that no offer is important enough to be printed on paper, click here. This link sends you to the DMA's Mail Preference Service site. Computer recycling. All of our outdated equipment is recycled by UNICOR through the Green-Fed II program. And quite a few more things I'll type in when I get time and organized. This page is a work in progress, obviously. |
